Sure – Let's rethink insurance

What is the difference between Viss and home insurance?

Is home insurance enough?

Many people think that smart device insurance is a no-brainer because they already have home insurance. But while home insurance is a certain security, it's certainly not the best option for those of us who love our smart devices.

Here are some things to keep in mind:

1. The value of phones and smart devices in home insurance drops by 25% every 6 months

Traditional insurance companies fully depreciate devices over 18-24 months. Therefore, the insurance companies do not compensate the devices in all cases, but pay customers an amount in line with their depreciation rules.

This is how these depreciation rules work: You buy a new iPhone 16 Pro in December 2024 for 210.000 kr. You find that the phone is stolen in June 2025. By then the phone is 6 months old and therefore worth only 157.500 kr to the insurance company (In June a year later, your phone would be worth only 78.750 kr!).. and in all these cases you would also have to pay a deductible 🥲

One year after purchasing a phone: 157.500 kr – 30.000 kr deductible = you receive 127.500 kr in compensation.

Two years after purchasing a phone: 78.750 kr – 30.000 kr deductible = you receive 48.750 kr in compensation.

At Viss, there are no depreciation charges and you always get a comparable device replaced.

2. What is your deductible?

3. Will you pay a higher price next year or miss out on a refund if you experience a loss?

Most home insurance policies have a deductible of around 30.000 – 40.000 kr, but this amount varies depending on how many policies you have and on what terms. The deductible is the amount of the damage you assume. Most often, this is calculated so that the damage amount you receive from the insurance company is reduced by 30.000 kr or the amount of the deductible.

Viss' deductible is a minimum of ISK 11.000 and a maximum of ISK 25.000. The amount depends on the price of the device when you purchased it.

When you have a claim with most insurance companies, you risk losing reimbursements or no-claims discounts at the end of the year. Damage to mobile phones is the most common type of damage today, so there is a good chance that your broken mobile phone will affect whether you get a no-claims refund this year or a lower discount on your insurance next year.

With Viss, you are always on the same good terms even if you experience a loss.

4. Will you get your phone replaced if it is stolen?

Home insurance only covers theft if there are signs of a break-in (for example, a broken window) or if violence or threats have been used. Home insurance won't help you if your phone is stolen from your pocket or bag while you're out and about.

Surety covers all thefts , all we ask is that you report the theft to the police within 7 days of the event.

5. Will you be given a loaner phone while the damage is being repaired?

If you are unlucky enough to have a loss, you may not be able to get a loaner phone through your home insurance. Can you imagine being without a phone for a few days? No? Not us either.

That's why Viss always lends you a phone while you wait for your mobile phone to be repaired or replaced.

6. Is your insurance valid worldwide?

We know you're on the go and your phone follows you everywhere. So it doesn't matter to us whether your screen broke in the Taj Mahal or the tiles in Vesturbær, your insurance is always valid.

Viss smartphone insurance is valid worldwide.
